How much rain?

I didn't quite understand how much rain we have had this summer until I looked up the stats. In June, the city shattered a 212 year record, with 269.1mm of rain (10.5 inches); it was the second rainiest month in our history (July, 1901 was a bit wetter). We usually get around 78mm of rain in June, so it was very, very wet. So far we've had around 95mm of rain this month. Our average is 91.7mm for the month, so we are ahead of schedule.

The rain has stopped, at least for now. It's hot, hot, hot outside now. It's supposed to cool down a bit on Sunday and then start going back up to so very hot, maybe with thunder storms. I have the fans going and I'm giving the plants -- especially the tomatoes -- plenty of water. I'm also making sure I drink plenty of water!

The rain was good, for all that it seemed excessive. For the first time in several years, my part of the country is not overwhelmed with forest fires; we're down to 17 active fires (compared to the over 1000 each year for the past few years). The city is not full of smoke for a change; it makes breathing much easier and my throat is not as bothered. Of course, now we're getting hot, dry weather, so the fire risk is there again.

The gardens are doing well, both from insane amounts of rain and now sunshine and heat. My tomatoes are getting many, many flowers. My flowers are thriving, getting taller, and blooming wonderfully.

I am very thankful for the rain that we got this year.

Summer Already?

Spring seemed to take forever to get here. April was nice, then snowy, then nice, then snowy... Winter just kept coming back. Spring finally came at the end of April, but it still felt like forever before the leaves were out and the grass was green.

Now here we are, the end of May, and it's suddenly summer. The weather report keeps promising thunder storms this week, but none have made an appearance. Instead, it just keeps getting hotter and hotter. It feels more like July than May.

I don't enjoy +30 any more than I enjoy -30!

On the other hand, the trees are in leaf and the one by my building is in full bloom of beautiful pink flowers. My plants are growing. The birds are singing loudly. It seemed like almost overnight everything started to grow.

It won't be "summer" hot for long; the heat is set to drop a lot next week. Maybe the rain will finally come. I'll enjoy that.

Winter

Winter seems to have struck Edmonton full force today. There was a bit of snow over the weekend, but not much. Today, though, it's snowing a lot. It was really pretty, walking home in the dark with the snow falling gently. Come February I'll probably be saying nasty things about the snow, but right now I don't mind it.

Plus, today I got off work a bit earlier than expected and now I'm at home enjoying tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. It's the ultimate in comfort food and perfect for the start of winter.

A sign that you live too far north...

When the weather man says "right now it's -14" and you think "oh, good, it warmed up."

Snow

Last weekend it was summer. Now winter is back for one last stand (at least I hope it gives up after this). It's cold and snowing and blowing and I am not liking it. I slogged through snowdrifts up to my knees to get to work. Plus, I have a cold. It is times like this that it is very, very hard to remember that God is sovereign over the weather and therefore He has a purpose for this and so, ultimately, it is good. It doesn't feel good.
On a more positive note: I only have 2 days left, it's only 1:00 and I'm about to leave work, my nephew made the soccer team, I taught the kids about David and Bathsheba without having to say "ask your parents" once, and I finally won a chess game. So, yeah, life isn't all snow.

cold

I'm cold. It's cold outside: very, very, very cold. According to the Weather Network it is -28, it feels like -40, and there is a wind chill warning. Plus, I'm at work and it's chilly in here and my fingers are cold. Plus my 10:00 appointment didn't show up (maybe because of the cold) and my 11:00 cancelled (they called in sick).
So I'm here waiting for my 1:00 appointment. Now I'm cold and annoyed at people who don't show up for appointments. Well, except the one who called in sick; I'm not annoyed when people call. And I wonder what happened to basic manners? When you can't make an appointment, is it not customary to call? It happens a lot around here: people forget, or something more important comes up, or they change their minds, and they don't bother to call. It's very annoying. Especially when I'm cold.
